Royal Academy History
Since 1786 when it was founded by the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Royal Academy has been synonymous with art and artists. As a destination for art lovers it has a long standing tradition of putting on ground breaking, best-selling art exhibitions. As a leader in art education it houses a prestigious art school with a global reputation; and as both a home and voice for artists it is led by a group of the country’s most eminent artists and architects -known as Royal Academicians. These artists are at the heart of everything the Royal Academy does, and are intrinsic to the values of courage and imagination it holds dear. The story of colour as a creative force will always be a fundamental element of the work and vision of the Royal Academy and Academicians.
